Actor Denzel Washington, aged seventy, reportedly exhibited the same commanding presence and resolute demeanor for which he is known in films such as Training Day and The Equalizer during a tense public exchange with an aggressive autograph seeker in New York City.
In a video circulated online, Mr. Washington was approached in August by an individual affiliated with GTVReality Channel while seated in his vehicle. The man allegedly sought multiple autographs, but after the actor declined, the encounter escalated when the individual made a disparaging remark referencing Mr. Washington’s past struggle with alcoholism, saying, “It’s better when you’re drinking.”
Mr. Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner, rebuked the comment, describing the man’s behavior as “disrespectful” and asserting that he had been sober for fifteen years. The autograph seeker then attempted to retract his provocation, complimenting Washington’s performance in Malcolm X (1992) and professing admiration for the actor’s work with director Spike Lee.
The conversation took a spiritual turn when Mr. Washington asked the individual whether he believed in God. Although he continued to refuse to sign any items, he invited the man closer to his vehicle and displayed an image on his phone, asking, “What do you think this is?” When the autograph seeker replied that it appeared to be an image of God, Washington responded, “Who do you think took the picture?” before admonishing him, “Listen to me: you can play games with me, but be careful when you talk to me about God.”
Mr. Washington, who was baptized in late 2024 and has frequently spoken about his Christian faith, has long emphasized the importance of spirituality in his life. He notably counseled actor Will Smith following the 2022 Oscars incident, warning him: “At your highest moment, be careful — that’s when the devil comes for you.”
Online reactions largely favored Washington, with numerous social media users condemning the autograph seeker’s conduct. One commenter noted, “You provoked someone and got disrespectful when he didn’t give you what you wanted.” Another wrote, “Denzel read your energy, and it was off. No one owes you anything in this world.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, asserting that celebrities are not obligated to fulfill fan requests and commending Washington’s restraint despite the provocation. Some even remarked that the confrontation had an “intensely cinematic feel,” befitting the actor’s formidable on-screen persona.
Representatives for Mr. Washington have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.#newsafro_
