Country music legend Reba McEntire was moved to tears during Monday night’s episode of NBC’s The Voice as she paid tribute to her late stepson, Brandon Blackstock, who passed away in August at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with cancer.

The 70-year-old singer became emotional following contestant Aubrey Nicole’s heartfelt performance of Martina McBride’s I’m Gonna Love You Through It — a song centered on a woman supported by her spouse through breast cancer. The poignant lyrics deeply resonated with McEntire, who reflected on her family’s recent loss.

“I lost my oldest son because he did not win with cancer, so that was a real reminder that life goes on,” McEntire said tearfully. “We sing songs about it so that we can remember the ones that we love so much and that we lean on at times like this.”

McEntire had been married to Brandon’s father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 until 1995. She helped raise Brandon and shared a close bond with him throughout his life.

In a recent interview with People, McEntire described her relationship with Brandon as “precious,” saying,

“I absolutely loved that child. Brandon was funny, mischievous, and full of life. He brought joy to everyone he met, and he is sorely missed.”

Brandon, who was formerly married to Kelly Clarkson, 43, shared two children with her — River, 11, and Remy, 9 — and had two older children, Savannah, 23, and Seth, 18, from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Emmys last month, McEntire shared an update on how the family is coping with the loss:

“The kids are doing well — they’re bonding together and taking it one day at a time. We know God’s got this. We miss him — we miss him every minute.”

Following his passing, McEntire posted a touching tribute on Instagram, writing:

“Last week, my stepson — my oldest son — Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God. His struggle is over, and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence. There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will live on through his family. Rest in peace, cowboy. Happy trails to you till we meet again.”Country music legend Reba McEntire was moved to tears during Monday night’s episode of NBC’s The Voice as she paid tribute to her late stepson, Brandon Blackstock, who passed away in August at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with cancer.
