Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested an elderly suspect, popularly described as “Grandpa,” for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine concealed inside food items at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to NDLEA officials, the suspect was intercepted during a routine security screening at the airport after officers discovered suspicious packages hidden inside food containers in his luggage.

A subsequent search revealed quantities of cocaine carefully concealed within the packaged food items, a method investigators say is increasingly used by drug traffickers attempting to evade airport security checks.

The agency confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody, while further investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the drugs and the intended destination.

The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to intensifying surveillance at airports and other entry points across the country in order to combat drug trafficking and protect public safety.

Authorities also warned that drug smuggling networks continue to explore new concealment methods, but assured Nigerians that the agency remains vigilant in detecting and dismantling such operations.
