Taylor Swift’s Track Father Figure and Alleged References to Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta

On October 3, 2025, Taylor Swift released her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Among its twelve tracks is Father Figure, listed fourth on the album. While the title references the 1987 George Michael ballad of the same name, and George Michael is credited as a co-writer, the song is an original composition and not a cover.

Following its release, fans have speculated that the lyrics of Father Figure allude to Swift’s prior contractual disputes involving her former record label, Big Machine Records. Specifically, online commentary has suggested references to Scott Borchetta, founder of Big Machine, and Scooter Braun, whose company Ithaca Holdings purchased the master recordings of Swift’s first six albums in June 2019 for approximately $300 million. At the time, Swift publicly stated she had not been afforded a fair opportunity to acquire her own masters.

Lyrics from the track include: “You made a deal with this devil / Turns out my d**’s bigger… You pulled the wrong trigger / This empire belongs to me / Leave it with me.”* These lines have been interpreted by many fans as reflecting feelings of betrayal in connection with the 2019 sale.

In response to the transaction, Swift announced and subsequently undertook the re-recording of her first six albums, a strategy designed to regain artistic and commercial control over her early work. To date, four of these re-recorded albums have been released. The commercial success of those projects contributed significantly to the momentum of her Eras Tour, one of the most successful global concert tours in history.

Earlier this year, Swift disclosed that she had successfully reacquired ownership of her master recordings, thereby resolving, at least in part, the dispute that began in 2019.

The release of The Life of a Showgirl was preceded by an unauthorized leak of all twelve tracks across online platforms such as Discord. Despite this, the album has been met with widespread public engagement, with fans analyzing both its lyrical themes and personal references.

This record also represents a stylistic and professional milestone for Swift: it is her first album produced without her long-time collaborator Jack Antonoff in over a decade, and the first released since her engagement to NFL player Travis Kelce in August 2025. Instead, she partnered with producers Max Martin and Shellback, marking a renewed collaboration with the team responsible for several of her earlier chart-topping albums.

Visually, The Life of a Showgirl introduces a bold aesthetic shift, with album imagery portraying Swift in the stylized persona of a Las Vegas showgirl. Swift has described the project as being inspired by the rigorous balance of her Eras Tour schedule and studio sessions in Sweden, experiences that shaped both the music and the narrative direction of the album.#newsafro_
