Actress and recording artist Selena Gomez, aged 33, has publicly expressed her aspiration to experience motherhood “one day”, less than two weeks following her marriage to music producer Benny Blanco.
Ms. Gomez made the statement while engaged in promotional activities for the second season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the sequel to the original Wizards of Waverly Place television series on Disney+. The actress, who portrayed the character Alex Russo in the Emmy Award–winning series from 2007 to 2012, shared the remarks via her official Instagram Story on Thursday.
Posting footage from the reboot’s season finale, Ms. Gomez disclosed that her character is now depicted as a mother, captioning: “Alex Russo is a mommy. Hopefully one day that’ll be me.” The video segment depicts Ms. Gomez in an emotional scene with her on-screen daughter, portrayed by Janice LeAnn Brown.
In accompanying behind-the-scenes footage, Ms. Gomez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perform alongside Ms. Brown, describing the experience of portraying a maternal role as “emotional and fulfilling.” Both actresses reportedly became emotional during the initial table read in which their characters’ familial relationship was revealed.
The performer’s reflections on motherhood are consistent with prior statements she made regarding her personal medical circumstances. In a 2024 Vanity Fair interview, Ms. Gomez disclosed that she is medically unable to carry a pregnancy due to complications associated with lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition. She acknowledged that this limitation had been “difficult to accept,” requiring a period of emotional adjustment and grief.
Ms. Gomez stated that, although her path to motherhood will differ from conventional expectations, she remains resolute in her intention to raise a child through surrogacy or adoption, noting that either process would yield the same maternal bond: “At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
She has also previously indicated that she had contemplated adopting a child independently by the age of 35, should she not have found a suitable partner. During a Time 100 Most Influential Companies event, Ms. Gomez reflected on a five-year period of singleness preceding her relationship with Mr. Blanco, during which she developed a plan to pursue adoption if necessary.
Mr. Blanco, for his part, has publicly articulated a shared desire to start a family. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, he identified parenthood as his “next goal,” citing his fondness for children and extensive experience as a godfather and uncle.
Ms. Gomez and Mr. Blanco reportedly began dating privately in mid-2023 and confirmed their relationship publicly in December of that year. Approximately one year later, Mr. Blanco proposed with a diamond engagement ring. The couple solemnized their marriage on September 27, 2025, in a ceremony held at a nursery in Santa Barbara, California, attended by close friends including Taylor Swift and Only Murders in the Building co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin.
