The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned a recent courtroom incident where a judge reportedly ordered a lawyer to kneel while proceedings were ongoing, describing the action as unprofessional and demeaning to the legal profession.
The controversy arose during a court session involving activist Omoyele Sowore, where his lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, allegedly drew the judge’s anger after raising his voice while making submissions.
In reaction, the NBA stressed that while lawyers are expected to maintain decorum and respect in court, judges must also uphold the dignity of the judiciary and avoid actions that could humiliate legal practitioners.
The association noted that ordering a lawyer to kneel is inconsistent with the principles of justice, fairness, and mutual respect that should exist between the Bench and the Bar. It warned that such conduct could erode public confidence in the judicial system.
The NBA further reiterated that disciplinary measures, where necessary, should follow established legal procedures, rather than actions that may be perceived as arbitrary or degrading.
Legal observers say the incident has sparked broader conversations about courtroom ethics, judicial authority, and the need to balance discipline with professionalism in Nigeria’s justice system.
