Residents of Uromi in Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State on Wednesday descended on seven suspected kidnappers, beating and burning them to death in a shocking act of mob justice that has since sparked outrage across the country.

Eyewitnesses said the suspects were intercepted by local vigilantes and youths while travelling through the community. During a search of their vehicle, locally made guns believed to be Dane guns were reportedly discovered, prompting residents to raise an alarm that the men were kidnappers.

The alarm quickly attracted a large crowd, and the situation escalated as angry youths attacked the suspects. Despite attempts by a police officer at the scene to disperse the crowd and prevent the killings, the mob overpowered him and carried out the brutal attack.

Graphic videos circulating on social media showed the victims being beaten before they were set ablaze, a development that has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups and security analysts.

Authorities in Edo State have condemned the incident and described it as unlawful. Security agencies have reportedly launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the mob action.

Community leaders said fear and frustration over the rising cases of kidnapping in several parts of the state may have contributed to the violent reaction by residents.

However, some reports suggest the victims may have been hunters travelling through the area, raising concerns that the mob could have killed innocent people based on suspicion.

Security experts have warned that resorting to jungle justice undermines the rule of law and could further worsen tensions in already fragile communities.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities seek to restore calm and prevent possible reprisal attacks.
