Media personality Meghan McCain has provided a detailed update regarding the health condition of her mother, Cindy McCain, weeks after the 71-year-old U.S. diplomat suffered what her daughter described as a “mild stroke.”
Speaking on her Citizen McCain podcast on Tuesday, Meghan confirmed that her mother had been transported back to Arizona from Italy, where she initially received medical treatment. “She has now flown back to Arizona with my brother Jimmy and is recovering very well,” Meghan stated, adding that Mrs. McCain “is still in the hospital but will be leaving soon.”
Meghan emphasized that her mother’s cognitive health remains unaffected, explaining, “She is cognitively completely fine. She talks just like she always has and has been texting. I’ve talked to her many times, and to my family.”
The 40-year-old, who is currently in her seventh month of pregnancy, acknowledged that while Cindy is facing some lingering physical effects from the stroke, doctors have described her condition as mild and not severe. “I’m not going to tell you she’s fine and everything’s amazing,” she said, “but thank God, she is cognitively completely fine.”
Meghan also explained her decision to delay public comment, noting that she and her family wanted to ensure they had accurate information before releasing any details. “I didn’t talk about it on my social media because my brothers and my family and I were trying to figure out what was going on,” she said.
Cindy McCain, who serves as Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), experienced the medical incident while in Rome on official duty. Following her hospitalization, the WFP released a statement confirming that she was “expected to make a full recovery.”
In a subsequent message shared through the organization, Mrs. McCain expressed gratitude to the medical professionals who attended to her in Italy, saying:
“I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received. My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care. I look forward to continuing my recuperation at home in Arizona with my family.”
