Adamawa Governor Fintiri Officially Defects from PDP to APC, Strengthening Tinubu’s Hold on States

In a major political development, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move was confirmed in a statewide broadcast on Friday, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Fintiri, who registered with the APC broom in Madagali Local Government Area, described his decision as a strategic step to align the state with the ruling party at the federal level. He emphasized that the move would enable Adamawa State to fully leverage national programmes, including infrastructure development, social welfare initiatives, and investment opportunities.

The defection includes several members of his cabinet and at least 15 lawmakers from the Adamawa State House of Assembly, all of whom have resigned from the PDP and are expected to join the APC. Speaking on the decision, Fintiri said it followed “wide consultations across the state” and reflects a commitment to long-term development and stability for Adamawa residents.

Political analysts note that Fintiri’s defection further consolidates the APC’s dominance, bringing the party’s control to 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states, and significantly reducing the PDP’s influence at the state level. While the move is being interpreted by some as a boost for President Bola Tinubu’s political agenda, others view it as a reflection of the fluidity and strategic realignments characterizing Nigerian politics ahead of the next general elections.

The PDP has not issued an official statement on Fintiri’s defection as of this report, but the development is expected to trigger nationwide political discussions on party loyalty, governance, and electoral strategy.
