The Republic of Kenya on Friday held a state funeral in honor of the late opposition leader, Raila Amolo Odinga, at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, following his sudden passing earlier in the week.

Mr. Odinga, aged 80, reportedly died from a suspected heart attack at a health facility in southern India on Wednesday, prompting a nationwide outpouring of grief for a man widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most consequential political figures.

Affectionately known as “Baba” (“father”), the late Odinga was celebrated as a stalwart of Kenya’s pro-democracy struggle and a central figure in the country’s return to multi-party politics in the 1990s. Despite five presidential bids, he never ascended to the presidency, but his tenure as Prime Minister (2008–2013) and his pivotal role in the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution secured his legacy as an architect of modern Kenyan democracy.

The state ceremony was attended by President William Ruto, alongside regional heads of state and dignitaries, including Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Tributes from both local and international leaders described Odinga as a “patriot of exceptional courage” and a “visionary statesman whose life was devoted to justice and reform.”

The funeral followed violent incidents on Thursday, when security forces reportedly opened fire on large crowds that had gathered at the Kasarani Stadium to view the late leader’s body as it lay in state, resulting in at least three fatalities, according to human rights organization VOCAL Africa.

Mr. Odinga’s body is expected to be transported to his ancestral home in western Kenya on Saturday, where additional public tributes will be held before a private burial service on Sunday.

His passing leaves a significant leadership vacuum within the opposition, raising uncertainty ahead of the 2027 general elections and marking the end of an era in Kenya’s post-independence political landscape.#newsafro_
