In a landmark moment for Nigerian sports administration, Samson Adamu has been appointed as the Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This appointment marks the first time in the organization’s nearly 70-year history that a Nigerian has occupied its top administrative seat.
The announcement was made on Sunday, March 29, 2026, following a high-level CAF Congress meeting at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo. Adamu, a seasoned football administrator, steps into the role effectively immediately.
Adamu replaces Veron Mosengo-Omba (DR Congo/Switzerland), who resigned from the position on the same day. Reports indicate that Mosengo-Omba stepped down to contest the presidential election of the Football Federation of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FECOFA).
Before his historic elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events (also referred to as Director of Competitions). In that capacity, he earned widespread respect for managing the logistics and delivery of major continental tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Often described as the “engine room” of CAF, the Secretary General is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the governing body, overseeing legal matters and implementing executive decisions.
Adamu’s appointment comes during a transformative period for African football, coinciding with several major announcements by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe:
- AFCON Expansion: The flagship tournament will expand from 24 to 28 teams.
- New Schedule: Starting after the 2027 edition, AFCON will transition to being held every four years instead of every two.
- African Nations League: Plans are underway to launch a Nations League-style competition in 2029 to ensure consistent continental fixtures.
Samson Adamu is the son of Dr. Amos Adamu, a former Director General of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission and a former member of the FIFA Executive Committee. The younger Adamu is an alumnus of the prestigious FIFA Master programme and holds degrees in Business Management and Computer Science.
