The Kano State Police Command has apprehended a notorious syndicate of five individuals accused of impersonating police officers and using fake credentials to extort unsuspecting citizens across several northern states.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the arrests in an official statement issued on Saturday.
According to the statement, the suspects were arrested during a special intelligence-led operation conducted by operatives of the Command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS) on Thursday, 16th October 2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m.
Haruna stated:
“The State Police Command, in a significant operation driven by credible intelligence, on 16th October 2025, at about 1:00 p.m., apprehended five suspects who had been parading themselves as police officers.”
The suspects were identified as Aliyu Abbas (35), Sani Iliyasu (47), Ashiru Sule (41), Abubakar Yahaya (45), and Adamu Kalilu (45).
Items recovered from the suspects included:
A fake Police Warrant Card,
A pair of handcuffs,
CFA 2,500,
Mutilated naira notes of various denominations, and
Their operational vehicle, a blue Peugeot 406 bearing registration number NSR-188-BD.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to engaging in multiple acts of impersonation and extortion, admitting that they had used the fake warrant card to defraud innocent citizens and carry out illegal operations across Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States.
SP Haruna further disclosed that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution in accordance with the law.
He recalled that a similar arrest was made in September, when the Command apprehended another impostor posing as a police officer to extort members of the public.
While urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminal impersonation and other unlawful acts.
“The Command remains resolute in its commitment to upholding law and order and will not tolerate any form of criminal impersonation or illegal activity within the State,” the Commissioner stated.#newsafro_
